Abstract

Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-A feed-water regulator for steam generators of the kind in which the feed valve is actuated by fluid pressure acting on a differential piston under the control of a float-actuated balanced auxiliary valve has at least one face of the piston acted upon continuously by a fluid having a constant pressure,. which may be higher or lower than the boiler pressure. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the auxiliary valve is formed as a shoulder on a tubular spindle 55 connected to a counter-balanced lever 51 provided with an adjustable fulcrum 52. The lever 51 is pivoted at 50 to a float 49 adapted to work in a chamber 48 connected to the boiler by upper and lower pipes 81, 83. The spindle 55 passes loosely through a cover 58 into a bore in the differential piston 59, whose its shoulder co-operates with a seat on the piston, relative movement being limited by wings 75 on the spindle working between shoulders in the bore. The annular space below the smaller piston is connected to a region of low pressure through passage 74 and port 73. The second fluid is admitted through a port 78 and acts on the lower face of the larger piston. Boiler pressure passes through the spindle 55 to balance the auxiliary valve and through the leakage space between the spindle and cover to depress the piston when the auxiliary valve is closed. The lower end of the piston is coupled by an articulated spindle 62 to the feed valve 61. In a modification, the valve is isolated from the boiler and the valve is actuated by the second pressure under the control of the auxiliary valve, which either controls the supply or the exhaust of the fluid to or from the larger surface of the larger piston, the constant pressure either acting on the annular surface of the larger piston or on the smaller piston.
