Treating ores preparatory to extracting precious metals and to facilitate concentration.-A process for the preparatory treatment of ores &c. containing a precious metal or metals in finely divided substantially colloidal form comprises heating the material to such an extent and under such conditions that the precious metal is rendered more easily amenable to further treatment, while avoiding the formation of compounds of precious metal with other constituents of the material. The treatment may be carried out in an oxidizing or reducing atmosphere, and the temperature employed, which is below the softening temperature of the material, may, for example be 200-700‹ C.
