Abstract

Alloys.-In the manufacture of alloy steel from scrap having a high percentage of silicon, nickel, chromium, or copper, the scrap is treated, preferably in an electric furnace under oxidizing conditions until the gases are removed to a point indicated by a maximum silicon content of 0.1 per cent, and the bath is then subjected to reducing conditions, alloying material being subsequently added if desired. It is preferred to remove the gases to a point indicated by a silicon content of 0.05 per cent. The high per centage alloy steel scrap is defined as containing over 8 per cent of nickel, 5 per cent of copper or chromium, and 0.75 per cent of silicon. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 195,677.
