Coloured and opaque l i q u i d s , utilizing; actuating. - Apparatus of the type in which advertisements, pictures, objects, &c. are displayed by changing the thickness of a screening liquid is actuated by the inertia of a mass associated with the liquid container. Fig. 1 shows a mass 14 carrying display matter 16 and suspended by spring 15 or by a flexible diaphragm in a liquid 13, so that when the device is mounted on a moving vehicle or is otherwise subjected to vibration the matter 16 is intermittently brought up against the transparent face 11 of a container 10. The liquid surrounding the display isconcealed by a mount 17, 29. The mass 14 may be of glass and carry the matter 16 on its rear face. The matter 16 may be of rubber, or may be painted, embossed, engraved, printed, stamped, stencilled, or photographed or otherwise applied to the mass, and may be on a flap downwardly extending from the mass, or on the window 11. The rear wall 12 of the container may be transparent so as to display matter on each side. The liquid may be white, black, or coloured, and may be opaque or transparent, and its colour may be complementary to that of the display matter. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the mass 14 is mounted on a flexible wall 20 of the container. The margin 21 of the wall, which may be of rubber or celluloid, is preferably corrugated. A storage compartment 22 may accommodate the displaced liquid. Lamps 24, 25 may be located in the cornpartment 22 or behind the wall 20. In a further form the inertia of the mass 14 causes one or both walls of the container to be flexed and form a lens through which the display matter is seen with changed appearance, both the walls and the liquid being transparent. The wall 20 or the matter 16 may be coated with a self-luminous composition. The liquid may contain glycerine or other ingredients for lowering the freezing point.
