Abstract
968, 288. Temperature sensitive signs. J. E. DOOLEY. Feb. 1,1963 [Feb. 16,1962], No. 6099/62. Heading G5C. A sign comprises a liquid whose light transmitting properties are temperature sensitive so that the sign is visible at one temperature and not at another. A front plate 10, intermediate plate 11, rear plate 12 and reflector 13 shown in Fig. 1 are secured together in a fluid tight manner to form a traffic warning sign. The legend I C E is cut through or into the plate 11, and when the plates are secured forms hollow cavities, which are filled with a liquid such as camphorated oil or ethyl salicylate which becomes cloudy at a low temperature, so that the word ICE stands out dark against a background illuminated naturally or by car headlights. Fig. 4, shows an embodiment in which the legend'is an embossing 10a on the front plate surrounded by the liquid. The liquid may become more transparent with fall in temperature, or alternatively one of its constituents or phases may crystalise, precipitate or change colour with fall in temperature. The sign may be artificially lit from behind, may be coloured, and may be applied to aircraft, refrigerators or advertising.
