Abstract

1,164,625. Signs. J. C. RUDGE. 23 Sept., 1966, No. 42656/66. Heading G5C. A display sign comprises a single stationary light source 8 and a stationary mask 9 which has some opaque portions and some light-transmitting portions so arranged that an observer moving in direction X sees the light source through only one light transmitting portion at any one instant of time and thus sees the succession of illuminated images on his retinae of which each forms a part of a legend in such a way that the resulting " after images " on his retinae are spread out by the movement to form the complete legend by the phenomenon known as " persistence of vision." The light transmitting portions may be transparent. The light source may be positioned above or below the mask in which case a mirror is provided behind the mask to reflect the light through the mask.
