A symbol - bearing plate 1 is illuminated by a lamp L in combination with a rod or tube 12 which extends parallel to the edge of the plate and acts as a lens. The rod or tube may be glass or plastic and coloured. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates a series of such plates, mounted in a block 6 which accommodates various rods and lamps to illuminate the symbols on the fronts of light-transmitting plates.
