A translucent member e in the shape of a letter or motif is peripherally surrounded by a light reflecting bevel a which is illuminated by daylight, or at night by a discharge tube d, the light therefrom passing through transparent side or return parts of a plastics front plate e to illuminate the bevel a. In Fig. 3, the translucent member e is pressed or moulded from clear plastics such an acrylic or cellulose acetate butyrate; and its front face is treated with a translucent paint or dye or by securing a piece of coloured plastics thereto. The side wall of the member e is left clear. In Fig. 4, the translucent member comprises a thick piece e of clear plastics having a coloured layer f cemented thereto.
