Abstract

321,638. Hanby, W. Aug. 3, 1928. Annealing. - Metal is cleaned and annealed before tinning by immersion at annealing temperature in a pickling bath to which has been added a proportion, not exceeding 25 per cent by volume, of a cyanide of an alkali metal. Preferably the cyanide content of the bath is 5 per cent. A bath for annealing at 850‹ C. comprises sodium chloride, 60 per cent; sodium carbonate, 20 per cent; and sodium cyanide, 20 per cent. A bath for annealing at 950‹ C. to 1000‹ C. comprises barium chloride, 80 per cent; calcium chloride, 15 per cent; and potassium cyanide, 5 per cent. The annealing temperature may vary between 500‹ C. and 1200‹ C. The bath may be covered with a layer of charcoal or fine coke to wipe the plates as they are lifted out. The tinning bath is placed adjacent the annealing bath, and a conveyer system may be combined with lifting- mechanism so that the plates are fed continuously through the baths.
