Coating; cleaning and pickling.-In a process for coating iron, steel, or cast iron articles to protect them from corrosion, the articles are embedded in a mixture of zinc carbonate, powdered zinc, barium carbonate, and silica contained in boxes and the boxes are heated in a gas or salt bath furnace to a temperature below the melting point of zinc. The articles may be cleaned before treatment by first immersing in a bath of boiling caustic potash and rinsing in tepid water and then in a 10 per cent solution of sulphuric acid. The coating mixture may comprise 2 parts of smithsonite (natural zinc carbonate), 25 parts of powdered zinc, 5 parts of barium carbonate, and 60 parts of silica.
