Abstract
320,408. Pugh, J. V. July 12, 1928. Wheel-building apparatus. -Relates to a method of, and apparatus for, building wire-spoked wheels in which one set of spokes is initially tensioned by a screwing- operation and then over-tensioned by relative axial dis. placement of the hub and rim; the other set of spokes is then preliminarily tensioned by a screwing- operation, and the final predterrnined tensioning of both sets of spokes obtained by releasing the hub and rim displacing means. As shown in Fig. 1, the rim A is detachably gripped between a pair of rings a, b and the hub B centred on devices mounted coaxially with the bosses a<4>, b<4> of the rings. These devices comprise an upper spindle f<6> fitted with a sleeve i on which the hub B is clamped by a nut k, washer l, and cotter l<1>. The sleeves j rests on a hollow spindle f in the lower end of which is fixed a nut f<2> traversed by a screw g. The member f is fitted to slide, but not rotate, in a sleeve d the lower end of which is rigidly secured to the base-plate h<1>, the screw g being secured against longitudinal movement through the member d. In operation, the hub having been adjusted with respect to the rim by means of the screw g, the lower set of spokes is tensioned in the ordinary manner. The hub is then drawn down by further adjustment of the screw g so as to stress the lower set of spokes beyond their normal tension in the finished wheel. The upper set of spokes is then assembled and screw-tensioned to a degree less than that required in the finished wheel. The screw g is then turned to release the hub whereupon the excess stress in the lower spokes is automatically transferred to the other set. In a modification, the hub is fitted over, and clamped to, an extension of the member f. Fig. 7 shows a modification applied to a cycle wheel in which the hub B is clamped, by means of its bearing- cones C<1>, B<2> between the adjustable member 0 and a detachable spider O<9>.
