Abstract
316,747. Cornelius, F. B., and Stanton Ironworks Co., Ltd. July 4, 1928. Joints with packing compressed radially on assembly ; sleeve joints. -Fluidtightness between the adjacent ends of two pipes a, a<1>, Fig. 1, is secured by jointing rings e of guttapercha which are compressed into a tapering space between the end of each pipe and an external sleeve d upon axial movement of the said pipes and sleeve. The said packing space is formed by reducing the end b of the pipe to a tapered formation, increasing in diameter in the direction away from the pipe end and terminating in a more blunt frustoconical surface or abutment c against which the jointing ring may ultimately be forced, while the sleeve d may be provided with tapped holes h to receive service connections. The invention is also applicable to a spigot-aud-socket joint, Fig. 2. As shown the internal socket surface f<1> is slightly tapered, while the inner end of the spigot is formed with a cylindrical portion g providing a shoulder g<1> against which the end of the socket f is adapted to abut so as to leave a clearance between the bottom of the socket and the spigot. A jack y and packing pieces p, Fig. 3, may be employed for connecting adjacent pipes.
