Balancing moving parts; compensating for unequal expansions. - Elastic members 13, 14 are arranged to rotate with the shaft 5 of a centrifugal pump for high-pressure hot water, or other rotary machine in which the shaft and the parts connected to it have different coefficients of expansion. The space between the members 13, 14 may be filled with water under pressure and the members act as springs to press the impellers, or other members on the shaft, against the collar 15. To balance the axial thrust, water under pressure from one of the pump stages is passed through the slot 8 into the chamber 9 from which it passes in a thin film according to the position of the relief disc 10.
