Abstract

Tension-arrangements; clearing-apparatus.-In a machine for winding yarns or threads the yarn x, Figs. 1 and 2,.is tensioned by passing through a ring 19 slidably mounted on a rod 8, the rod being adjustable in a slot 7 so as to be set parallel to or at an angle to the winding spindle 17 according as cylindrical or conical packages are being wound. An arcuate drag-plate 20 adjustably hinged at 21 may be provided above the rod 8 and a fixed drag-plate 14 having a rounded edge 15 between the rod and the traverse guide 16, the yarn passing successively over or through the members 20, 19, 14, 16 to the package 23. During winding the ring 19 is traversed on the rod 8 and the yarn tensioned thereby the reversal at the end of each reciprocation of the guide 16 resulting in increased tension and a firm ended package 23. The ring 19 also effects a clearing of the yarn. In winding conical packages the rod 8 is set at an angle to the spindle 17, Fig. 4, whereby the drag over the edge 15 of the plate 14 is greatest when the ring 19 approaches the nose of the cone. To assist in forming the nose dished inwardly a bent plate 27 mav be secured to the plate 14 to arrest the ring 19 in its travel towards the nose. The ring 19 may be an annular member or may be formed as an eye 28, Fig. 5, when winding doubled yarns.
