Abstract

315,056. Todd Oil Burners, Ltd., and Clark, E. May 21, 1928. Spray burners.-A liquid-fuel burner contains a whirl chamber into which the fuel may be introduced tangentially under high pressure or axially under low pressure for atomization by air or steam introduced tangentially, the depth of the whirl chamber, the apertures from the tangential passages into the whirl chamber and the aperture through which the spraying agent passes into the whirl chamber being simultaneously .adjustable. The burner shown comprises a body part a formed with two inlets c, c<1> and provided with an extension b to which an apertured cap l is secured by a nut m. A needle valve n is formed integrally with a spindle f which is threaded to engage a nut f<2> mounted adjustably on studs p projecting from the body a. The spindle f is formed with a projection n<1> engaging a slot in a nozzle k which screws in a plug h. The plug h screws in the extension b and is formed with flats h<2> .so as to form channels h<1> communicating with tangential channels on the end of the plug. The pitch of the thread on the spindle f may be double that on the nozzle k so that by turning the hand wheel z the depth of the whirl chamber formed between the nozzle k and the plate l, the discharge apertures from the channels j, and the position of the needle valve n relatively to its seating o in the nozzle k are simultaneously adjusted. In use, liquid fuel may be supplied at low pressure to the body part through the inlet c and pass through the aperture o into the whirl chamber for atomization by steam or air supplied through the inlet c<1> and entering the whirl chamber through the tangential channels j or, alternatively, liquid fuel may be supplied at high pressure through the inlet c<1> to pass into the whirl chamber through the, tangential channels j. When supplying the liquid fuel at high pressure the valve n may be moved to close the aperture o by adjusting the nut f<2> on the studs p. The burner may be mounted in a framework u secured to the galley stove, furnace, &c., by providing the inets c, c<1> with coned surfaces to engage the coned ends of extensions s, s<1> of the supply conduits, the extension s<1> being carried by an adjustable screwed sleeve t. The framework u may be fitted with a secondary air regulator v and a flame deflector cone w.
