Abstract
314,528. Hibberd, C. E. June 30, 1928, [Convention date]. Gas meters.-A gas meter of the diaphragm type comprises a casing 1 preferably of cast iron formed as a single casting integral with the valve plate 2. the valve plate gallery 3, the sides 5 of the valve box 5, the sides 6 of the gas inlet duct 6 and the flag-shaft stuffing boxes. The front and back plates 14 of the meter are formed with nozzles 13 which are jointed to nozzles 15 extending downwardly from the valve plate 2. The valves 36 controlling the admission and discharge of gas to the measuring chambers slide over seatings 18 and are guided by upwardly projecting pins 38 on the valves engaging slotted plates 37 fixed to the seatings. The valves are reciprocated by horizontal arms 39 operated by a crank 40 on a shaft 26. The arms 39 pass through recesses 41 in the upper surfaces of the valves and are provided with lateral extensions 42 so as not to interfere with the rear pins 38. The flag shaft arms 9 are connected by links 33 to a shouldered screw 31 passing through a slot in the tangent plate 30 and secured to it by a nut 32 having inwardly turned sides so as to be slidable on the tangent plate. The tangent plate is fixed to a worm 33 which is slotted to receive a set screw adjustably securing it to the shaft 26. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the construction of the meter as regards the valve inlet and outlet ports and ducts. The valve plate 2 is formed with ports 10 communicating directly with the measuring chambers 11 and with exhaust ducts 12 leading to an exhaust port 15 located above the meter partition 16. The port 15 communicates with the gas outlet nozzle 17 which is provided with a flange 17 partly covering the ducts 12. A cover plate 19 formed with gas supply and delivery connections 29, 22 fits over the valve box 5 and makes a gas tight joint with the gallery 3. The gas inlet duct 6 is formed with a well 23 to catch dirt and foreign matter entering the meter with the gas. The crank shaft 26 is mounted in a stuffing box 25 in a plate 24 covering the duct 6. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
