This invention relates to dry gas meters and has for its object to provide an improved arrangement of the gas passages to and from the valves of the meter.
In dry gas meters the gas passages to and from the valves are usually fixed below the valve plate which causes some of the passages to be restricted in area and difficult to repair.
According to the invention the .gas passages are provided on the upper surface of the valve plate, and I prefer to arrange the upper part of the flag wires together with the' leve'rs and connecting links actuating the valve crank spindle, at the same side of the meter as the valves, and to enclose them in the valve chamber, a spindle being carried from thischamber through a stuffing box, to actuate the index and prepayment mechanism of the meter;

In the construction hereinafter described it will be understood that the ports (Z d d, and e 6 e in the respective valve gratings open at different levels.
In the construction illustrated the flag wiresm are disposed at the outer ends of the valve gratings d, e and thus the upper parts thereof together with the-levers m and connecting links m by which the valve crank spindle a is operated may be enclosed with the valves 0, p in the valve chamber ,7, the spindle r for actuating the index mechanism being carried through a stuffing box 7'.
The inlet pipe 8 of the meter is connected with the valve chamber 9 by means of a passage formed by a fittingt applied upon the upper surface of the valve plate a.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the details of construction hereinbefore described. Thus, the flag wires are not necessarily disposed at the same side of the meter as the valves. They may, if de sired, be disposed at the opposite end of the valvesor towards the opposite end of the meter and the two inside ports of the valve gratings be accordingly connected to the diaphragms. Again, the upper parts of the flag wires, the levers, and links connected therewith, the upper part of the valve crank spindle and the spindle acting the index 7 mechanism may 'be situated without the valve chamber.
I claim: I 1. In a dry gas meter, a casing, a valve plate disposed within said casing and provided with ports, an inlet fitting within said casing and opening therein above said valve plate, an outlet fitting upon said valve plate forming an outlet passage and having ports therein above said valve plate, valve gratings disposed above said valve plate and provided with ports opening at different levels, one of which ports in each valve grating communicates with a port in the outlet fitting and other of which ports communicate with the ports in the valve plate, and valves slidably fitting upon said valve grating.
2. In a dry gas meter, a casing, a valve plate disposed within said casiugand provided with ports, an inlet fitting within said casing and opening therein above said valve plate, an outlet fit-ting upon said valve plate forming an outlet passage and having port's therein above said valve plate, valvegratings disposed above said valve plate and having ports opening, at different levels, one of which ports in each valve grating communicates'with a port in the outlet fitting, an-
other of which ports directly communicates with a corresponding port in the valve plate, While the remaining ports of the valve gratings indirectly communicate with ports in the valve plate, fittings upon the valve plate forming connecting passages between the said ports in the valve plate and the respective ports in the valve gratings which indirectly communicate therewith, and valves slidably fitting upon the said valve gratings.
3. In a dry meter, a casing, a valve plate disposed within said casing and having ports therein, a partition upon said valve plate extending between two sides of said casing and forming a valve chamber, an inlet fitting to the'said valve chamber for gas, an outlet fitting in said valve chamber upon said valve plate, valve gratings disposed upon said valve plate andwithin said valve chamber and having ports opening at different levels and communicating respectively with the outlet fitting and with the ports in the said valve plate, and valves slidably fitting upon the said valve grating 4. In a dry gas meter, a casing, a valve plate disposed within sald caslngand provided with ports, a partition upon'said valve plate forming a valve chamber, an inlet fitting upon the said valve plate for admisposed above'said valve plate and provided with ports opening at different levels and communicating respectively with the ports in the valve plate, ports in the outlet passage fitting and ports in the connecting passage fitting, and valves slidably fitting upon the said valve gratings.
5. In a dry gas meter, a casing, a valve plate disposed within said casing and provided with ports, a partition upon said valve plate forming a'valve chamber, an inlet fitting upon the said valve plate for admission of gas to the said valve chamber, fittings upon the said valve plate in the said valve chamber forming outlet and connecting passages and having ports, valve gratings disposed above said valve plate and provided with ports openiirg at different levels and communicating respectively with ports in the valve plate, ports in the outlet fitting and ports in the connecting passage fittings, valves slidably fitting upon the said valve gratings, diaphragms below the valve plate 'communicating'with certain of the ports,
