313,505. Holzverkohlungs-Industrie Akt.-Ges., and Varga, J. June 12, 1928, [Convention date]. Grant of Patent refused. Hydrogenation, destructive.-Carbonaceous materials are treated with hydrogen or with gases containing or yielding hydrogen at high temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen sulphide or materials yielding hydrogen sulphide and molybdenum or tungsten or both or their compounds. The amount of hydrogen sulphide may vary between 1 per cent and 6 per cent by weight of the initial material, and the optimum concentration varies for different materials. Suitable sources of hydrogen sulphide are free sulphur, alkali and alkaline 'earth sulphides, and organic sulphides such as thiophene and carbon disulphide. The sulphur content of the starting material is taken into consideration in determining the amount of hydrogen sulphide to be used. Activators such as boric acid and chromium compounds may be added. The products of the hydrogenation are almost entirely saturated aliphatic, aromatic, and hydro-aromatic hydrocarbons free from compounds of oxygen, sulphur, and nitrogen, and are stated to be sufficiently pure for use as motor fuels, lubricants, &c., without further treatment. Numerous examples are given. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of from 6 to 12 per cent of hydrogen sulphide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
