Abstract
312,591. Verschoyle, W. D. Feb. 25, 1928. Low - pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-A capillary tube of quartz is filled as completely as possible with mercury or an alloy or amalgam vaporizing at a comparatively low temperature and giving light of the wavelength required and sealed. The tube is filled after the manner of a thermometer. The tube may be closed by closely-fitting metal stoppers serving as electrodes and held in place by a powerful spring. In the arrangement shown lead-in wires c are sealed through the ends of the tube a and connected to metal caps d which are held between spring arms f carried on an electric lamp cap g. The tube may be bent and its ends secured directly to the cap. In sealing such a tube it is cooled with liquid air to secure complete fitting.
