Abstract

415,113. Discharge lamps. ROTHER, F., 6, Bozenerstrasse, Sch÷neberg, Berlin. Jan. 19, 1933, No. 1834. Convention date, Jan. 19, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] A lamp is provided with visible electrodes 2, 3 which are not heated by means of an auxiliary current source and are in the form of parallel wires or the like, which at one end are connected to contacts in the lamp cap 7, and the other ends of which are insulated from each other, e.g. by means of a glass bridge 4. Further, the filling consists of a gas or a vapour or a mixture thereof at a pressure of 6 mms. or less and of another gas or vapour or mixture thereof at a pressure greater than 6 mms., and the partial pressures of the two components are relatively adjusted so that the former component emits a column of brilliant radiation in one colour between or around the electrodes and the latter component covers one or both of the electrodes with a brilliant radiation in a different colour. The respective partial pressures may be 10 to 30 mms. and 2 to 4 mms. and the filling may consist of a mixture of argon and neon, or may comprise mercury, or the former component may consist of nitrogen and argon at partial pressures of 12 mms., and the latter component of helium and hydrogen having equal partial pressures. If the distance between the electrodes is sufficiently small, the glow covering each electrode may form one aureole surrounding both electrodes. A clear or frosted bulb may be used and the electrodes may be shaped as signs &c. and consist of a radioactive metal or alloy such as molybdenum-thorium or of an alloy of chromium and nickel or of nickel and iron. They may consist of a metal, which, as described in Specification 415,111, is coated with another metal which in the periodic table lies on the left side of, or on the left side of and below the line containing, the core metal. With continuous-current only one electrode is covered with a glow. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the former component consists of nitrogen and argon at partial pressures of 4 mms., and that a straight wire electrode may be arranged perpendicularly to a plane containing a wire loop-shaped electrode and passing through, or terminating at, the centre thereof. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
