Abstract

Leading-in wires; filaments, supports for; bulbs; making lamps.-A metal cap 3, Fig. 1, fused to a glass tube 1 on the vessel, is soldered to a thin metal tube 4 which may be clamped on to a large conductor 5 by a ring 6 which may also serve as a terminal. Fig. 2 shows a gas-filled electric incandescent lamp in which the conductors 5 are inserted into the tubes 4 through a prolongation 10 at the opposite end of the lamp before filling and sealing. The conductors may be supported by mica plates 13, 14 when the lamp is used in a horizontal position. In a modification, the cap 3 and tube 4 may be in one piece. The cap may be of platinum, copper, iron, nickel, or an alloy of nickel and iron having the same coefficient of expansion as glass. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a modification wherein each cap 3 is sealed at the inner end of a re-entrant glass tube enclosing the tube 4. The cap 3 may be sealed inside instead of outside the tube 1; this is preferable when the cap is of oxidizable material, or when the tube is of quartz. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
