Benzene; toluene. - m-Cresol is converted principally into benzene and also into toluene by treatment with hydrogen at 200 atmospheres and 450‹ C. in the presence of cobalt oxide which has previously been activated by being heated in the presence of carbon dioxide to 350‹ C.
