Abstract
A mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen for the production of ammonia, or the hydrogen alone, is purified from carbon monoxide by preliminary passage over a base-metal catalyst, such as nickel or cobalt, at a temperature, such as 350 DEG C., which is below that required for the production of ammonia but sufficiently high for the production of methane. The gases are treated while under pressure, which may suitably be that required afterwards for the production of ammonia.
