Hydrogen.-In the process of removing carbon monoxide from gaseous mixtures containing it, for instance water gas or illuminating gas, and replacing it by hydrogen, by passing such mixtures with steam at 400‹-750‹C. over caustic lime, the latter is used in pieces instead of powder. The reaction preferably takes place in vertical vessels or towers. The carbonated lime may be re-calcined, if desired, in the reaction vessels; in this case, a second or further towers may be brought into use while the revivification proceeds in one. The gaseous mixtures treated may contain additional gases, such as nitrogen, which passes on with the hydrogen obtained: Specification 2523/09 is referred to.
