Abstract

310,453. Hume Pipe Co. (South Africa), Ltd. April 26, 1928, [Convention date]. Joint-making packing. - Fluid-tightness between a pipe 3 and a collar or socket 4 on another pipe 2 &c. is secured by an interposed sealing ring 10 which is formed by rolling up a cylinder 10<a> of rubber &c. sheeting by relative sliding movement of the collar and the pipe 3. The cylinder 10a is positioned on the end of the pipe 3 before the pipe and collar are brought together, and the end 11 thereof is thickened preferably by folding it over a flexible band 12 in the form of a closely wound wire helix. The rubber sheet is also preferably tapered towards the end 11 so that the increase in diameter of the ring is proportional to the distance it rolls. The collar 4 is provided with an internal lip 8 which prevents the ring 10 from being forced out by the internal pressure, while the joint may be completed by bitumen 13, 15 inserted between the collar and pipe.
