Abstract

309,955. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Palueff, K. K.). April 18, 1928, [Convention date]. Transformers.-In transformers in which the high voltage winding 11 is separated from the low winding 12 by insulating material having different specific inductive capacities, e.g. a solid insulating cylinder 15 adjacent the high voltage winding, and an air or oil duct 16 for cooling purposes adjacent the low voltage winding, the potential gradient is distributed between the two materials in proportions suited to their dielectric strengths by embedding in the cylinder 15 a conducting member 18 maintained at a low potential e.g. by'connection to the core as at 19. Thus a reduction in the thickness of the cylinder 15 which decreases the leakage and lowers the reactance of the transformer is rendered possible. A construction suitable for transformers having the low voltage windings in sections between which the high voltage winding is interleaved, and comprising discs of solid insulation with conducting discs embedded therein is also described.
