Abstract
722,560. Transformers. MICAFIL, Ltd. Aug. 13, 1952 [Aug. 13, 1951], No. 20374/52. Class 38 (2). A core suitable for a high voltage transformer comprises layers of mutually separated ferromagnetic plates, the layer being separated by insulating sheets D of hard paper, pressboard, oil-saturated paper, mica or moulded resin. The plates in adjacent layers are staggered, the flux flowing in paths indicated by chain dotted lines. The core thus forms a non-conducting structure to which the coils of the high voltage winding may be connected so that there is little potential difference between the winding and the core, only thin insulation being needed. Connection is made by bolts holding the plates together, some of which are not insulated and connect together plates in alternate layers similarly placed with respect to the magnetic and electric fields. The core may form a capactive load reducing the magnetizing current. The primary winding may be located at one end of the core, a tertiary winding connected to a capacitor may provide phase compensation and improved flux distribution. A cylindrical core may have transverse yokes at each end to improve the return flow of flux through the air. The magnetic elements may be in the form of wires.
