Abstract

309,101. Rotiniff, A. G. Dec. 30, 1927. Addition to 282,820, [Class 68 (i), Excavating earth &c.]. Pneumatic conveyers and elevators.-A method of removing excavated materials from barges consists of pressing into the material to be removed a chamber having one end open and the other end leading to a discharge pipe, whereby the material fills the chamber which has compressed air nozzies disposed around it, the compressed air disintegrating the material and forcing it to the discharge pipe. Water jets and mechanical means may assist the air jets. Additional jets may be provided to assist in discharging the material. In Fig. 2, a tube j carries a chamber h with a knife edge i which is forced into the material. Pipes n deliver compressed air to manifolds o, p from which nozzles q deliver into annular recesses, the air disintegrating the material and carrying it through the pipe j. The chamber h may be aligned with the pipe j. The nozzles may be arranged to give a swirling motion; further the air supply may be intermittent to give an explosive effect, or the air supply may be admitted alternately to the manifolds. In Fig. 6, a turbine wheel 30, carrying cutters 31, is rotated by air delivered through pipes n, the exhaust air then completing the excavating operation and removing the spoil; water delivered through pipes 34 and nozzles 33 assist the operation.
