Battery lamps.-In a portable safety lamp for use in explosive atmospheres, the reflector 14 is insulatingly mounted and forms part of the electric circuit, and the switch 22, makes and breaks the circuit with the reflector and is operated by means which are insulated therefrom, the, insulation of said parts forming also a gastight joint. The operating means shown comprise a plunger or balls 26 separated from theswitch contact 22 by a resilient cup 27 and adapted to be depressed by a slidable thumb-piece 24 having a cam formed on its rear surface. In the lamp shown in Fig. 3, the ring 12 that retains the glass 13 is locked, and the head 83 of the lamp is locked on the battery casing 11, by a clamp 34 operated by a screw 35. In the lamp shown in Fig. 1, the light may be focused by turning the bulb-holder 17, which is threaded into the refl.ector, and the holder is retained in the adjusted position by a spring wire 19 engaging notches 21 in its flange.
