Be it known that I, EDMUND R. BARANY,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flash Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to flashlights but has particular reference to that class of such devices as employ one or more lamps at each end of the same adaptedto be placed in circuitwith a suitable source of electrical energy.
An important object of the invention is to provide, in a flashlight of the class mentioned, an improved means for supporting the lamps in anoperative position with respect to the several associated elements, and a novel means for controlling the circuits leading to said lamps from a suitable source of electrical energy.

In the drawings wherein is shown what I at present consider the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 5 indicates an elongated casing, within which is arranged the usual form of cell 6, the carbon electrode 7 of which is disposed centrally wit in the customary zinc container 8 which forms the opposite electrode of the cell. The cell 6 is provided with a cardboard or other insulating sleeve 9 which, as will be readily understood, serves to. insulate the cell from the casing 5.. Within the casing 5, at one endthereof, there is arranged an insulating disc 10, WlllOh is supported by insulating rings 11, seated upon a ledge .12 formed in the easing 5 by rolling the sameto form ahead as shown at '13. This insulating disc carrics a cup shaped metallic element 14 which is provided centrally with a screw thrfeaded 15, into which is fitted the lamp support outer screw-threaded contact 16 of the usual form of-lamp 17. Upon the cup shaped ele:
ment 14' there is arranged an insulating disc 18 which is provided centrally with an'opening 12 through of the lamp 17 projects. Upon the insulatwhich the central contact 20 ing disc 18 there is arranged a metallic disc 21 carrying a contact element 22 which 'is provided intermediate its ends with an arch 23 adapted to contact with the carbon electrode 7 of the cell 6. The insulating disc 10, the cup shaped member 11, the insulating disc 18, the metallicdisc associated contact element 22 are retained in a unit by means of rivets 24, which are insulated from the cup shaped element '14 by reason of the provision of relatively large- 25 formed therein. The casing 5 is screw threaded 'as shown at 26 and is adapted to receive a screw threaded ring 27 which is provided at 21, and its one end with a flange 28 adapted toengage the insulating disc 10 and retain the same in position j upon the rings-11. In order that the screw threaded .rin 27 may be readily removed from the en of the casing. 5 there is provided a pair of wings 29, formed integral with the flange 28, which enable -011B to readily unscrew the ring 27, asv will be. appreciated. Upon the screw threaded portion26 of the casing there is arran'g' a screw threaded reflector head-30 which carries a reflector 31' provided centrally with a relatively large opening 32 by the presence of which, insulation between the screw threaded contact-16 of the lamp and the reflector 31 1s provided. Upon the outer-end of thereflector 31 there is arranged the usual form of lens or closure 33. lt will be readily appreciated that by turning the reflector head 30 1n one direction or the other the position of the reflector 31 may be changed with respect to the lamp 17 in order to accomplish a focusing of the light rays emitted by the lamp 17 by which focusing the light beam may be concentrated upon a given area.
The opposite end of the casing 5 1s screw threaded as shown at 34 and is adapted to re ceive thereupon a reflector head 35 which Is screw threaded as shown at 36 and proyided with an inturned flange 37. Upon the flange 37 there is positioned a reflector 38, the inner end of which is screw threaded as shown at 39 and adapted to receive the screw threaded outer contact 40 of an electric electrically engage the central contact 47 of the lamp 41. Theinsulating disc 44 also carries a metallic disc or ring 48, the periphery of which is adapted to contact with the head 35. The ring 48 is provided centrally with an annular flange 49 adapted to cooperate with a grooved ring 50 which carries acompression spring 51 adapted to con tact with one end of the zinc container 8. Around the grooved ring 50 there is ar- 'ranged an insulating ring 52 with which is associated a metallic ring 53. The plate 45, disc 44, rings 48, 52 and 53 are retained in an assembled relation by means of rivets 54 which are insulated from the ring reason of'the provision therein of relatively large openings 55. In order to retain the several elements above referred to in their respective positions within the head 35, there is provided a locking ring 56 which is ar: ranged within an annular groove 57 and adapted to engage the ring 48 at the periphery thereof. 1
To control the circuit through the lamp 41 there is provided a switch, indicated as a whole by the numeral 58. This switch comprises a slide 59 adapted to operate upon a switch box 60. The slide 59 is provided with. wings 61 which extend inwardly through parallel slots 61' and so engage a safety cam 62 that the same is moved with i he slide 59in either direction. Between the switch box "60 and the casing 5 there is disposed an insulating plate 63 to which is attached a circuit closure 64 having contact arms 65 and 66. Tlievciicuit closure 64 is also provided vith an arm 67 which carries a button 68 adapted to be depressed when the slide 59 is moved into engagement therewith and over the same. Within the casing' 5 there is arranged a conductor strip 69, one end of which terminates below the arm 66 whereas the other end is passed through a guide 70 at one end of the casing and so held as to contact with the metal disc 53 when the head 35 is assembled upon the easing 5. Within the casing 5 there is arranged another conductor 71 which is electrically connected at one end to the contact element 22 and terminates at its other end directly beneath the contact arm 65. In order to close the circuit through the lamp 41, the slide 59 is so moved that the safety cam 62 contacts with the arm 65 and moves the same into engagement with the end of the to close the circuit, or. the button 68 may be depressed by further moving the slide 59,
as will be readily understood. With the arms 65 and 66 electrically engaging the conductors 71 and 69 respectively, current will be transmitted from the carbon electrode 7 through the conductor 71, from which it passes through the closure 64 to the conductor 69 and thence to the contact 46, through the lamp 41 to the reflector 38, and back to the zinc electrode 8 by way of the disc 48 and the spring -51.
To control the circuit through the lamp 17 there is provided a switch 72 which is identical with that indicated by the numeral 58. Within the casing 5 there is arranged a conductor 73 one end of which terminates below the arm 66, of the latter named switch, whereas the other end of the conductor is adapted to electrically engage the metallic cup shaped member 14. When it is desired to close the circuit through the lamp 17, the switch 72 is operated in the same manner as switch 58. When the arm 65 is brought into engagement with the casing 5 and the arm 66 moved toelectrically engage the conductor 73, current will flow from the carbon electrode 7 through the contact element 22 and disc'21 to the lamp 17 through the cup shaped element 14, the conductor 73, through the closure 64 to the casing 5, and back to the zinc electrode 8 through the disc 48 and spring 51. 7
From the construction of the device embodying my invention it is apparent that either one of the lamps may be placed in circuit independently of the other, or, if desired, both of the lamps may be made to function at the same time through theindependent switches 58 and 72. It will be appreciated that by the provision of the arms 65 in' both of the switches it is impossible to accidentally or otherwise close the circuits by depressing the buttons 68 without and the casing 5 respectively.
Having thus described my invention 1 claim:
1. A flashlight adapted to receive a end of said casing, connecting said lamp in circuit with said battery, it reflector head carried at the opposite end .of said casing, a lamp associated with said head, an insulating member associated with said head, a contact associated comprising a casing with said insulating member, said contact battery towar being adapted to engage the second named lamp, a metallic member electrically connected with said head, said metallic member being insulated from said contact by said insulating member, means for maintaining said contact, said insulating member and said metallic member united in an assembled relation as a unitary structure, a spring electrically connecting said metallic member with saidbattery, said spring beingv adapted to engage one electrode of said battery and ur e the other electrode, of said and means for placing the second mentioned lamp 'in circuit with said battery through said metallic member and spring.

A flashlight comprising a conducting casing adapted to receive therein a battery, lamps arranged at opposite ends'of said casing, conductors insulated from said casing and leading from one electrode of said battery through one lamp to the other electrode of said battery, means cooperating with said conductors for placing one lamp in circuit with said battery, and means including said casing for placing the other lamp in, circuit with said battery.
5. A flashlight comprising a conducting casing adapted to receive a battery, electric lamps arranged at opposite ends of said casing, conductors insulated from said casing leading from one electrode of said battery through one of said lamps to the other electrode of said battery, a circuit closer adapted to establish and sever electrical communication between said conductors, and a second circuit closer adapted to establish electrical connection between opposite electrodes of said battery through said casin and the other of said lamps.

A flashlight comprising a casing having a. battery therein, a, reflector head at one end of said casing, a lamp associated with said head, an insulating support, a contact element and a metallic member associated with said head and physically unite'd'in a unitary structure, said contact element being electrically connected with said lamp and insulated from said metallic member by said support, -a second lamp arranged at the op posite end of said casing and electrically connected to one electrode of said battery,
means for electrically connecting the electrodes of said battery through said contact element, first mentioned lamp and metallic member, and means for connecting the electrodes of said battery through the second named lamp and said metallic member.

A flashlight comprising a casing having a battery therein, a reflector head at one end of said casing, a lamp associated with said head, an insulating support, a contact element and a metallic member associated with said head and physically united-inn unitary structure. said contact element b ing v electrically connected with said lamp and insulated from said metallic member by said support, a second lamp arranged at the opposite end of said casing and electrically connected to one electrode of said battery, means for electrically connecting the electrodes of said battery through said contact element, first mentioned lamp and metallic member, means for connecting the electrodes of said battery through the second named lamp and said metallic member, and athrust element electrically connected with oneelectrode of said battery and adapted to urge said battery in a given direction within said casing, saidt-hrust element being common to the circuits of both of said lamps.

one electrode of said battery and arranged in proximity to the first mentioned lamp for urging said battery toward the second named lamp, said thrust element being a conductor common to the circuits of both of said lamps.
