Be it known that I, Fnnnors M. ROS N- FEED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have inventedan Improvement in Portable Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improvement in portable lamps, one object being to provide a device of this character in which the lighting circuit may be conducted through an exterior portion of the casing while another exterior portion effectively insulated to prevent accidental closing of the circuit by the interposing of a conductor between said portions. It is also contemplated that the present improve ments will be instrumental in simplifying the construction of devices to which they may be applied.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the drawings forming a part of the present specification and in which,

As shown in the drawings, a device embodying my invention may include a casing 1 of any suitable material either a conductor or a non-conductor. At one end of the casing 1, a cap 2 may be attached by any suitable means, here shown as a threaded por tion engaging a similarly threaded portion of the casing. Said cap is preferably provided with a spring member 3 adapted to bear against a battery 4 having one pole at 5 andthe other pole at 6. At the end of the casing opposite cap 2 is another similarly attached cap 7 provided with an opening adapted to receive and retain a lens or other light transmitting member 8.
Between the lens 8 and the battery 4, I provide lamp supporting means and means adapted to facilitate contact between one pole of the lamp and pole 6 of the battery. I also provide means for establishing contact between the opposite pole of the lamp and pole 5 of the battery. For this purpose,
a metallic strip 9 is provided and positioned so that one end thereof may be electrically connected with a portion of cap 2 which in turn isv in current conducting relation to pole 6 of the battery through the spring 3. A terminal 10 on strip 9 is positioned to cooperate with a suitable switch, illustrated in the drawings as including terminals 11 and 12 adapted to be moved into contact with terminal 10 on said strip 9.
In the present case, a reflector 13 of any suitable material may be interposed between the lens 8 and the casing 1. Said reflector being preferably provided with projections 14 at its lower end surrounding an opening 15 adapted to permit the passage of the nipple 16 of a lamp 17. The nipple 16 may be supported in a socket 18 attached to or forming a part of a contact plate 19 provided with projecting portions 20. Between the reflector 13 and the socket 18, I provide an insulating member 21 having perforations adapted to receive the projections 14 of the reflector and having other perforations adapted to receive the projections 20 of the contact member. The free ends of said projections are bent against the adjacent surface of said insulating member, thus securing both the reflector 13 and the contact plate 19 to the insulating member 21.
In operation, the battery 4: is inserted in the casing 1 with pole 5 in contact with one pole of the lamp 1'1 Current is transmitted to the other pole of the lamp through contact 6, spring 3, cap 2 and any suitable switch mechanism such as the one herein above described. It will be readily understood that the strip 9 may be fixed as in Fig. 2, or-slidable as in Fig. 4, depending on the character of the switch. In any event, strip 9 will be in current contacting relation with contact member 19 when the circuit is complete.
The foregoing construction is intended to effectively insulate the lamp socket in such away that no current will pass through the metallic reflector. In portable lamps, it has been found that a metallic tool interposed between the metallic caps of the lamp very.
often completes the circuit and burns out the battery to no purpose. By insulating the reflector through which the current has ordinarily been transmitted heretofore, this undesirable result is avoided.
I claim as my invention:
