Be it known that I, CHARLES F. FERNALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roxbury, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Dial-Illuminating Devices, 0 which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for illuminating the dials of steam-gages, clocks, and the like, the object of the invention being to provide a device in which a' lamp, preferably an electric lamp, can be readily attached to the casing of a steam-gage or clock and the rays of light from said lamp be directed across the face of the dial between the dial and the glass which covers it.
The object of the invention is, further, to provide a device of the character set forth which can be readily attached to or detached from steam-gages or clocks and which shall be neat and ornamental in its appearance and which shall also thoroughly protect and cover said lamp to guard against accidental breakage thereof.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a steam-gage with a lam attached thereto and in a manner embo yin my invention, the left-hand portion of sai figure being in elevation. and the ri ht-hand portion partly in elevation and part y in section on line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation viewed from the right of Fig. 1, broken away and shown partly in section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an insulating-block. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the portion of the 1am socket into which the lamp is screwed, toget er with one of the terminal plates attached thereto. Figs. 5 and 6 are side elevations of two portions of the lamp-socket. Fig. 7 is an underneath plan view of the cover for the lamp with a reflector therein.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is the casing of a steam-gageof any suitable construction; 11, the ring thereof, and 12 the glass on said ring, said ring and glass forming together a cover. A bracket or car 13, integral with the ring 11, rojects outwardly therefrom and is provide with a downwardly-depending annular rim 14, which is interiorly screwthreaded at its lower end to receive a screwthreaded lamp-holder 15.
The lamp-socket 16 consists of a receptacle formed of insulating material in two parts 17 and 18, and these two parts are clamped together and against the under side of the bracket 13 by the holder 15.
The electric lamp 19 is screwed into 8. cylindrical shell 20, located inside another shell 21, said shell 21 projecting into a cylindrical core in the insulated portion 17 of the socket 16. One of the terminal plates 22 is fastened to the shell 21, and to this terminal plate is fastened the electric wire 23 by a screw 24, the other electric wire 25 of the lampcircuit being fastened by a screw 26 to the terminal plate 27, said terminal plate 27 being fastened by a contact-screw 28t'o'the shell 21, said contact-screw 28' clamping the terminal plate 27 to the shell 21, it bein understood that the terminal plate 27 an the contact-screw 28 are insulated from said shell and from the terminal late 22 by the insulating-block 29 and insu ating-washers 30.
It will be seen that the holder 15 is rovided with an interior annular shou der which bears against the under side of a flange 31, formed upon the part 18 of the socket 16, and that the part 17 of said socket has a flange 32 thereon, which bears against the under side of the bracket or car 13, and that the holder 15 is exteriorly screw-threaded to fit into engagement with a screw-thread formed upon the interior of the depending annular rim 14 upon the ear 13. Said holder 15 is also provided with recesses 33 in its peri hery, so that it may be rotated by means 0 a spanner-wrench, and thus clamp the two portions 17 and 18 together, while the portion' 18 of the lamp-socket is forced a ainst the under side of the bracket 13. In the wall of the casing 10 and extending therethroiigh and also through the rim 46 of the cover 11 and in alinement with the lamp 19 between the glass 1'2 and the dial 36 is an opening 37, so that the rays of light from the j tion to the dial, and can thus be entirely removed from the cover 11, upon which it is lamp 19' shine through the opening 37 and upon the face of the dial 36.
