CROMWELL A. B. HALVORSON, JR, LYNN, MAS$AOHUSETTS ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPQRATION OF NEW YORK.
LIGHT-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
, Application filed December 4, 1916. Serial No. 134,886.
To all whom it may'concem:
Be it known that I, GRoMWEnL A. B. HAL- VORSON, Jr.,a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Light- Fixtures, cation.
lamp fixture and more particularly to the support for the lamp and for the parts as sociated therewith.
In the operation of incandescent lamps street lighting and other purposes, it is frequently necessary when operating the lamps either from series or multiple circuits, to use a transformer 1n connectlon with the lamp 1n order that the latter may be operated at'its rated voltage. My invention relates particularly to a fixture of this type which'is' compact, cheap and of few parts. I
My invention will best be understood .by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Fi re l is a perspective view partially brdiilen away, disclosing a lighting unit embod my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the top of the lamp support and the insulating base carried thereby; Fig. 3
is a section taken on Fig. 2; and Fig. 4: discloses my invention embodied in a lamp of a different type.
Referring now to the drawings, 10 is a base support which comprises an upper removable section 11 formed at its lower edge with a flange 11 which engages a corresponding rabbet in the upper end of the stationary part of the support. The upper end i of the section 11 is provided with a flange 12 within which a suitable globe may be mounted. A canopy 14 may be carried on the top of the globe. -A high voltage insulating base 15 of suitable material, such as porcelain, is mounted in the top of the removable sectlon 11 of the support, and constitutes a supporting base both foranincandescent lamp 20 and for a transformer 21 associated there-, with. The insulating base 15 is preferably provided with a ledge '16 formed with notches 17 which engage one or more lugs or projections 18 (one of which is shown in Fig. 3) formed on the inner side of the casing 11, which lugs hold the insulating base in position. On one side-of the insulating base is mounted a lamp socket 19 in whlch theincandesce-nt lamp 20 is received. When of which the following is a specifi v I e or angle irons 23,'and coils 24 from which My invention relates to an incandescent'f lamp socket.
the invention both for the incandescent lamp and for the transformer which is associated therewith,
and that the whole fixture'issimple and compact, and may readily beremoved as a unit from its support. It will also be apparent that the removable portion 11 constitutes the support for the fixture and at the same time serves as a housing for the transformer, and
" is amply spaced therefrom in order thoroughly to insulate the transformer from the support.
In Fig. 4 I have shown my invention embodied in a suspended type of lamp, in which the sameparts are present, but the lamp is suspended beneath the insulating base and the transformer mounted on the upper side thereof.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the prin ciple of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative, and that can be carried out by other means.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 'of the United States, is:
1. In combination, a support, an insulating base mounted thereon, an incandescent lamp socket mounted on one side of said base, and a transformer mounted on the opposite side thereof and electrically connected to said socket.
2. A lighting fixture comprising an insumounted on one side thereof, a transformer mounted on the opposite side thereof and electrically connected to the lamp socket, and a casing in which the insulating base is mounted and which serves as'a housing for the transformer.
3. A lighting fixture comprising a casing lating base, an incandescent lamp socket having a globe mounted thereon, eninsulating base supported by said casing and having on one side a transformer housed Within" said casing and on the opposite side a lamp socket extending within the globe.
4. A lighting fixture-comprising an insulating base, a lamp socket mounted on one side thereol and a; transformer mounted on the'opposite side thereof and a casin surrounding the transformer and provide with, 10 one or more projections onwvhich the insulating base is mounted. v 4
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my ha'ndthis 1st day of December, 1916.
