Abstract

307,223. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-(Ges.). March 21, 1928. Aromatic carboxylic acids are produced by allowing carbon dioxide to act, under pressure and at an elevated temperature, on aromatic hydrocarbons or their derivatives in the presence of aluminium halides. According to examples (1) benzoic acid containing benzophenone is obtained from benzene using aluminium chloride, (2) p-chlorobenzoic acid containing some p : p<1>- dichlorobenzophenone is obtained from chlorobenzene and aluminium bromide, and (3) ptoluylic acid containing some p : p<1>-dimethyl. benzophenune is obtained from toluene and aluminium chloride. Commercial xylene yields the corresponding xylic acids, principally 1 : 3 : 4- xylic acid together with some tetramethylbenzophenone.
