Abstract

303,127. Ezbelent Fils. Dec. 30, 1927, [Convention date]. Pleating.-In. pleating-machines in which upper and lower knives are pivotally mounted on an axle and reciprocated to and from the pleatsetting rolls, a positively-driven member actuates the knife carrier to move it toward one of the rolls and spring- actuated means resists said motion and urges the carrier towards the other roll. The knives are relieved from the action of the positively-driven member by means which may comprise a spring catch or locking device. As shown, knives 1, 2 carried by cheeks 3 are pivoted at 6 and moved by means of a pin or rod 9, mounted on a plate 10, pivoted at 11 and are moved against an upper forming plate 7 or a lower forming plate 8, according as it is desired to have overlapped or underlapped pleats. The plate 10 is oscillated by means of a spring-pressed lever 15, roller 20, and cam 21, adjustment being obtained by a slot 18 and slide block 17. The cam 21 is provided with a part a, d, c which corresponds to the lower position of the knives and it may also be a rearward movement of same, and is provided with a part a, b, c corresponding to the upper position and forward movement. An intermittently-rotated cam 28 or series of cams, which may have a series of removable bosses as in the machine of Specification 267,873, operates or not on a roller 27 carried on a lever pivoted at 23 and having one end 22 serving as a hook to engage a catch 24 on the lever 15. The hook holds the lever in the position for constantly producing underlapping pleats, and when the hook is released the machine will produce overlapping pleats. By inverting the respective positions of the pivot point 11 and sliding member 17, the hook acts on the projection 24 to produce overlapping pleats. In Fig. 2 is shown a. series of cams 28 - - 31 with bosses for engagement by the roller 27, said cams being slidable axially by means of a sleeve 26 and handle 33. Notches 35 - - 38 correspond to positions of the cams for engaging the roller 27 and a lower notch 35<1> to a position in which the hook 22 engages the catch 24. Raised portions 40, corresponding to a slight rotation of the sleeve 26, bring the roller out of engagement with the cams as it passes from one to the other.
