Abstract

386,004. Printing- machines. HOE & CO., Ltd., 109, Borough Road, London.-(Assignees of Tomlin, J. R. ; 910, East 138th Street, New York, U.S.A.) June 5, 1931, No. 21095/32. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1930. Divided on 386,313. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] Folding and associating apparatus.-In a rotary folding-apparatus for printing- machines adapted for producing either a collected or a non-collected folded product, a control member is provided, the single operation of which is adapted to change the apparatus from collecting to non-collecting condition or vice versa. Three sets of sheet-collecting pins 55, 56, 57 are provided on the folding and collecting cylinder 29 and are mounted respectively on rock shafts 58, 59, 60 to each of which is fixed a double-armed lever 64 carrying a roller 67 running on a fixed cam 68, the operative part 69 of which is adapted to rock the shafts and therefore the pins, at the moment the product is tucked into the bite of folding rollers 136, 137, so as to release the product. Each product is held at both ends by the pins until the folding blade operates. The part 69 is detachable for replacement purposes. An additional roller 65 is mounted on the lever 64, so that if it is desired to collect two products on the cylinder 29 before folding, an adjustable cam 99, Figs. 3 and 10, is moved into position to engage the roller 65 and thus prevent the roller 67 dropping into the cam part 69 and the rocking of the pins 56 at alternate revolutions. One of the folding blades, namely, the blade 73, is also rendered inoperative, the pins and blade being controlled by mechanism operated from a single hand-lever 85 pivoted on the outside of the machine frame at 86, Fig. 4, and held in either of two positions by a spring-pressed pin 119. The handle 85 moves a rod 81 which is slidable in a hollow bore in the shaft 47 of the frame 75 carrying the folding blades 72, 73, and actuates a lever 92 pivoted to the frame 75 at 93, Fig. 10. A slidable rod 97 engaged by the free end of the lever 92 carries the cam 99 and also a forked member 101 engaging a grooved collar 103 keyed to the shaft 104 of the blade 73 and forming one member of a clutch 103, 105 coupling the shaft 104 to its driving gears 76, 77. The gear 77 runs around a fixed gear 79. Actuation of the handle 85 when the machine is delivering non-collected products, causes the clutch members 103, 105 to be separated and the cam 99 to be moved to operate position so that the apparatus is ready for delivering collected products. In order that the handle 85 can be operated only when the cylinder 29 is in a suitable position, a collar 82 is fixed to the shaft 47 and has a slot 109 therein, and the handle 85 has a projection 110 thereon which bears against the collar 82 and prevents operation of the handle except when it is in alignment with the slot 109. A spring catch 113, Fig. 10, adapted to engage a notch on the member 103 or to engage either side of the member is provided to hold the parts 103, 99 in neutral position or in either of their operative positions. The cylinder 29 is mounted on blocks 48 eccentric to the shaft 47 and makes two revolutions to every three revolutions of the frame 75 with the number of folding blades and sets of pins shown. The folding rollers 136, 137 may be adjusted as described in Specification 384,680. Specifications 386,003 and 386,313 also are referred to.
