Michael Mahon, Brooklyn, N. Y.,Vassignor to Irving Trust Company, temporary trustee for IhHoe & Inc.,'New York, N. Y;, acorporation of 1 New York ApplicationNovember 25, 193s, Serial No. 699,739 12 Claims; (01. 164- 67) This invention in general relates tocutting and folding mechanism for newspaper printing machines, and has for its object the provision of an improved meansfor severing the associated webs which are cut andfolded to form the finished product. 7 p
A further object of the inyentionis to provide in a rotary cutting mechanism a cylinder having novel knife actuating means mounted thereon and operated by engagement witha coacting cylinder. V j I I p.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a rotary web cutting mechanism of generally improved construction, whereby thedevice will 1 be, simple, durable and inexpensivein construction, as well as converiientpractical, serviceable and efiicient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds,
t e invent n r d s the combination a arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction hereinafter described and 'claimeda The preferred embodiment of jthe invention is illustrated "in the accompanying drawings, wherein: H t
I Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of a pair of coactingcutting and collectingcylin-fl ders in one of which an emhodirnent of'ithe invention has beenincorporated, and illustrating the position of the cutting mechanism whenthe knifeis projected from the cylinder wherein samev is mounted; certain parts beingbroken away and others shown insectionj Figure. 2 "is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line and'as viewed in the direction of the arrow 20f Figurewl; a v V in I Figure 3 is afrag'mentary' diagrammatic view showing the position of the parts prior to the projection of the knife; T Figure 4 is a view of the periphery of the cut ting cylinder as viewedin the directionof arrow 4 of Figure 3; and, v o Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line and as seenin the fdirectioniof the arrow 5 of Figure 2.
In the drawings reference indicate corresponding parts in" the several views of the preferred form of the invention, 6 designate'sijafolding cylinder and 7 a with the usual practice. A-cutting abutment 9;
s uita y s p ts niheiiqlq g rlin r a wherein similar characters of coacting cutting cylinder. The foldingi' cylinder 6 is provided with the usual sheettakin'g means" receives the knife or blade 10 of the cutting cylinder 7, the said knife being actuated by mechanism fc irmi'ng the feature of the present in vention 1 t 1 The knife 10 is arranged betweenand projects outwardly of apair of plates or blocks 11 longi-' tudinally positioned. in a carrier or holder 12 h c m u tan ial y o ,u-sh -w figuration or channel. iron construction, the said knife and cheek blocks being held to "the carrier 12 by screws 13.. Thecarrier 12 is in turn secured by screws 14 toabar 15, having cam edges 16, best seenin Figure 2. The holder and the bar 15 ,are slidably mounted ina pocketorf recess 17 formed in the body-portion of the cutting cylinder 7f Each cam portionlfi of the ba r, 1'5 is in turn engaged byan arm or lug 18, formed on andadjacent member 19,, [pivoted on a shaft or stud '21' carried by' arms i 29 formed on a face block 30. The said face block 30and members carriedthereby are setv in the endia'ces of the aforesaid cylinder 7"an'd" secured thereto by the bolts 32" and screws 32'. Each member" 191s also provided with ase'condar'mor lug 22 oppositely. disposed to'tlielarm l'SIand adapted to be en-, gagedby an inner end of a plunger 23 arranged in a pocket or recess24formed in the face block 30. The plunger 23', as best shown'in Figure 2, is formed with an annular .flangej25 engaged by one end of a spring 26 encircling the body por tion of the plungerf23, 7 the other end of the spring 26 being seated against an inner wall' of the pocket 24 through which a portion of the plunger 23prot'rudes. By furtherjin'spe'ction of Figure 2,]it will be seen thateach plunger 231s formed with 'alstem "or. tongue 27 slidablyre-' pocket 24, and also to slidably'retain same therein while permitting the tongue 27 to normally protrude exteriorly of the "cutting cylinder to the extent indicated in Figure 3.
' The knife 10 is normally maintained in retracted position by springs 371, each of which fen circles 'a. projection oii's'tem'formed as apart of the'head of each screw 14. One endof the'spring' 31 is engagedagainst a projecting portion 34 of the aforesaid block 30, the other end of the said spring tbeing engaged against a projecting portion 35 formed on flthe j holder 12. It is to be] understood that the construction described above is provided "by dulplicatinglthe parts mechanism relative to the cylinder is made and.
comprises a plurality of abutment screws 36 each of which engages an adjacenti's'temjz'l tolaotuatd' the knife. Each abutment screw 36 is adjustable in a tapped hole 37 in the cutting cylinder '2 v and may be locked by means fora-jam e ement; or plug 38 thrust into engagement-therewith by a set screw 39. It will be observedthat when the cylinders are separated to out a heavier product, the abutment screws'may be backed out and locked in proper position soythatythe. knife will enter the cutting rubber the requisite distance to sever the products.
It will also be understoodthatin-cases where the products to be out are "of an invariable thickness not requiring a spacing or disposition of the cylinders-other than the jnormalgone illustrated, the abutment screw 36* maybe dispensed with and the surface of the cylinder 6 made uniform or level with adjacent portions of its periphery in the conventional *manner, the outer extremity of the plunger stem 27 then'being adapted'to directly contact thesurface of the cylinder 6 and 7 rotate. I y
The function and general manner of operation of .the device may 'now be summarized as follows;
"' Assuming the; folding and cutting cylinders 6, 7 respectively, are rotating-in the direction indicated by the arrows of- Figure'l, it willbe observed that as the stems or projections 2 of the plungers 23 are engaged by the heads of the screws or abutments36 of the 'folding cylinder 6, further angular movement offthe said cutting and; folding cylinders thrust the plunger 23. inwardly, thereby: engaging the in nermost end of same withan adjacent edge of y the arm 22, consequently; angling or "turning the member 22 about its pivot"2lflandfcngaging the oppositelydisposed arm 18 thereof with the' camedge 16 of the bar 'lfi. Further movement of the plunger" 23,. asthe cylinders 6 and 7 roe tate, will cause the knifelO to engage and sever the web W, which hasfheen. previously e ga ed yotherespe ti e Pins 8 ri8fa d ri asto whether. the productfisa non-collected,
or collected one, it being understood thatwhen the pins 8 are acting for a non collected prod uqt, the pins '8' will be withdrawn and in the event of a. collected) product,': the] pins 8, will. act to. take the product which is later transferred to the folding Cylinder in'accordance with well known practice. As the folding andcutting cylinders continue to rotate, the plunger 23 will be projected out of the pocket 24, to the extent indicated in Figure 3, in which latter position, it is again. ready for engagement with theabutinent screw 36 or the'peripheryof the collecting cylinder 6, in the manner described above while the knife 10 is .retracted intojthe cutting cylinder'L It will be noted that by means-of the. present invention, the web severing knife is normally held With n the, Qlitting cylinder, but is quickly, and, forcibly proiocted at; the [proper time to most effectively make the cut."
as the two cylinders 6 It will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illustrative and ,not, restrictivareference, being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the -scope of the invention.
