Abstract
302,072. Leach, R. W., and Bateman, W. H. Jan. 21, 1928. Channels and reservoirs in valves.-In a valve comprising a cylindrical member a slidable axially within a body b, channels provided in the fixed and movable parts and supplied with lubricant under pressure are so arranged as to surround the aperture through the valve when the latter is open or closed, while the supply to those channels which are exposed during the movements of the valve is interrupted during such exposure. Lubricant is supplied from a chamber c in the body by a piston d subjected to spring or fluid pressure through a hole e into a short circumferential groove k in the body and a longitudinal groove f on the member a communicating by a passage i in the member a with diametrically opposite grooves k, f. The grooves f terminate at their lower end in a circumferential groove h on the member a and at their inner end communicate with a circumferential groove g in the body. Circumferential grooves j coplanar with the passage i are formed on the member a but do not completely surround the member, their ends communicating with the grooves k in the closed position of the valve and with the groove g in the open position. When the valve is either open or closed, all the passages are thus in communication with the chamber c and the aperture through the valve is completely surrornded by lubricant under pressure; but, during the opening or closing movements, the grooves j, which become exposed, pass out of communication with the supply.
