Handles.-In a gas &c. tap having means for preventing accidental operation the handle or key c normally rests upon a portion of the plug or spindle e on which it is free to rotate, and for operation the handle &c. is moved axially into a position in which it is operatively keyed to the spindle &c., as, for example, by engaging an enlarged squaresection portion d, the handle &c. dropping out of engagement by gravity when released. The arrangement is shown as applicable to taps or valves a with upwardly and downwardly-inclined spindles as well as vertical spindles.
