Abstract
298,289. Levy, L. A., and Almeida Accumulators, Ltd. July 14,1927. Electrodes; electrolytes; gases supplied.-The positive electrode of a primary or secondary cell consists wholly or partly of activated carbon, the electrolyte consisting of a solution of one or more halides. The activated carbon may be saturated with chlorine and bromine. A primary cell may comprise an outer zinc vessel containing an electrolyte of zinc chloride or zinc bromide or a mixture of both. Within the zinc vessel is a porous jar containing a carbon rod surrounded with granules of activated carbon saturated with bromine and chlorine. A secondary battery is similarly constituted but the electrolyte is acidified with hydrochloric acid. The Provisional Specification states that the electrolyte may be neutral and may be of the composition described in Specification 268,047. Silver or other metals in spongy form may also be associated with the activated carbon.
