Abstract
865,810. Primary cells. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. May 9, 1956 [May 9, 1955], No. 13414/55. Class 53. The electrolyte in a primary thermal cell is a melted alkali metal thiocyanate, preferably potassium thiocyanate with a carbon anode and a magnesium cathode. Alternative electrode metals are zinc and silver, and alternative electrolytes lithium and sodium thiocyanates. In one form of cell a glass fabric impregnated with electrolyte is sandwiched between flat plate electrodes. A pile of cells with their heating elements may be sealed in a container. The heater may be a mixture of powdered metal and oxidizing agent ignited by a percussion primer fired by a percussion cap. The heating mixture may be incorporated in glass or asbestos fibre discs interposed between the cells of a battery.
