Abstract
1397767 Lithium-sulphur thermal cell DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 24 Aug 1973 [7 June 1972] 26650/72 Heading H1B A pyrotechnically heated cell comprises a molten lithium anode 1 and a molten sulphur cathode 6 contained in respective porous matrices, and a molten electrolyte 3 consisting of halides of an alkali metal. The anode matrix may be a metal foam comprising a nickelchromium alloy or stainless steel; the cathode matrix may be compressed carbon or graphite felt. The electrolyte composition may consist of lithium iodide, lithium chloride, and lithium fluoride. A separator 7 of glass cloth may be provided; alternatively, the electrolyte may be immobilized by the addition of a filler, e.g. silica. The cell casing comprises stainless steel caps 2, 5 sealed to a gasket 4 of rubber-asbestos composition. A number of cells are arranged in a stack (Fig. 2, not shown) with intervening layers of pyrotechnic material adjacent the anodes and spaced from the cathodes by layers of thermally-resistant material.
