Purifying liquids; separating by gravity.-Apparatus for separating liquids of different specific gravity comprises a container, fitted with screens of filamentary material, of which fine wire forms one constituent, an inlet above the screens and separate connections below the screens for drawing off the lighter and heavier fractions. A closed container 1 is divided by horizontal partitions 5, 6 into compartments 2, 3, 4, which are provided with horizontal screens 21, 22, 23. The mixture supplied through a pipe 16 is distributed to the compartments by central pipes 9, 10. After passing through the screen 21, oil in the compartment 2 passes away, through an annular space 14 surrounding the pipe 9, to the oil-discharge pipe 30, and water passes under a ring 24 to the water-discharge pipe 38. Separation takes place similarly in the compartments 3, 4. Steam heating coils may be placed beneath each of the screens. The liquid supplied to the container 1 may have been previously passed through separating apparatus, as described in Specification 297,551. According to the Provisional Specification, the screen may consist of minute metal or glass balls.
