Abstract

382,711. Gravity-separation apparatus. PENNING, C. J. H., Victorias Negros, Occidental, Philippine Islands. Sept. 17, 1931, No. 26095. [Class 46.] Apparatus for separating suspended matter from liquid comprises a number of inclined passages, each passage having a relatively small. cross-sectional area as compared with its length, so that suspended matter separates from the liquid as the liquid flows down the passages from an upper source of supply into a container from which the liquid and separated matter are separately discharged. As shown in Fig. 1, a number of inclined tubes 2 are connected to a cylindrical supply vessel 1 and have their lower ends opening on a substantially horizontal plane within a vessel 3. The solid matter separating in the tubes falls in the vessel 3 and is discharged by means of a scraper 4 and a screw 8 on a shaft 5 rotated by worm gearing from an electric motor 7. The clear liquid rising in the vessel 3 is discharged through a pipe 15 and valve 17 into a gutter 14. The gutter has two compartments and the pipe 15 has a nozzle 18 which can be turned to discharge into one or the other compartment. Horizontal branch pipes controlled by valves 24 are provided for emptying the vessel 3. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 5, the inclined passages are formed between parallel plates 26 by means of parallel partitions 28, Fig. 8. The clear liquid is drawn off through perforated horizontal pipes 29, connected by vertical branches with sight glasses 31 to the pipe 15. In another modification illustrated by Figs. 9 and 11, the inclined passages 'are formed between corrugated plates 33 and plain plates 34 in a casing 32. After reaching the lower ends of the passages the clear liquid rises in compartments 35, formed between each plate 34 and the adjacent plate 33 above it, and is drawn off through perforated pipes 36 at the upper ends of the compartments. A pipe 39 with valves 41, 42, discharging into gutters 40, 14 is provided for emptying the apparatus. The apparatus is.stated to be applicable in the treatment of sugar juice and ores.
