[Class 46.] In apparatus for separating the constituents of a mixture of liquids of different specific gravity provision is made for liquid to flow spirally inwards from an outer chamber. Such an arrangement may be combined with one as described in Specification 297,551, [Class 46, Filtering &c.], in which the mixture flows spirally outwards. Apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a container 1 with three superposed sets of spiral guides 7, 3, 5. A liquid mixture, for example one of oil and water, entering by a pipe 2 flows outward between the guides 3 to an annular space 4, whence the water flows inwardly between the guides 5 and is discharged through an outlet 6, and the oil flows inwardly between the guides 7 and is discharged through an outlet 8. The outlet 8 and an auxiliary oil outlet 9 from the space 4 communicate with a conduit 10 which delivers to a sump 11. There is an auxiliary oil drain 14 from the space above the outlet 6, and an auxiliary water drain 15 from the space at the centre of the guides 7. Steam heating coils 16, 17 are arranged near the bottom of the space 4 and near the top of the container. Figs. 6 and 7 show apparatus with a single set of spiral guides 20 intersected by a conical partition 22. The liquid mixture is supplied through a box 24 and nipples 26 to alternate spiral passages and flows outwardly to the space 4, whence it passes inwardly through the intermediate passages. There is a central main water outlet 27 and an auxiliary water outlet 301 from an annular compartment 30 of an upper box 28 to which water passes through depending pipes 31. The main oil outlet is through nozzles 33 and a compartment 32 of the box 28, and there are auxiliary oil outlets 29, 35.
