[Class 46] In apparatus for separating the. constituents of a liquid mixture of the type in which the mixture is caused to flow in a spiral path or paths outwardly from a central inlet or in the reverse direction guide means are provided for ensuring that the flow through the spirals has an upward or downward component. Figs. 2 and 3 show a nest of spiral baffles 12 to the centre 16 of which liquid, such as a mixture of oil and water, is delivered through a pipe 15. The spiral passages are bounded by upper and lower inclined plates 13, 14 and may be divided into tiers by intermediate inclined plates 32. The somewhat upward movement between the baffles promotes the separation of the oil. The centre space 16 may be arranged to taper downwardly and the pipe 15 may be provided with spiral baffles 33. The nest 11 is shown in Fig. 1 arranged in an outer casing 10. The separated oil rises in the space 18. The water passes downward around a baffle 20 and then up and over a weir 21 into a discharge chamber 22. Any further oil which separates collects in the space 24. Pipes 27, 28 are. provided for the discharge of 'the oil and a pipe 26 for the discharge of water. In amodified form of apparatus, two nests of spiral baffles are arranged one above the other and water after flowing through the upper nest is caused to flow inwardly through the second nest into the central space thereof. In a similar arrangement the flowmay be outward in both nests respectively. It is stated that the spiral passages may be fitted with electrodes to attract oil particles.
