Abstract
166,349. Mason, F. W. April 13, 1920. Separating by gravity.-Apparatus for separating grease and oil from liquids comprises an open vessel divided into compartments which communicate by means of branches on vertical pipes open at the top, so that the liquid beneath the grease and oil can pass from one compartment to the next without siphonic action. With the apparatus shown the liquid is supplied to one or more removable strainers or baskets 15 in the first compartment 4, and passes down into a space 14, Fig. 4, separated from the rest of the compartment by a deflecting-plate 38, but communicating with it at the bottom and also through perforations 19 at the top. The liquid passes on to the next compartment 3 through the pipe 17, which is open at the top, and an horizontal branch 18. The oil &c. on the surface pass through a pipe 20 with a rotatably-adjusted T-shaped outlet 39. Similar communicating means is provided for each pair of compartments, but the inlets of the vertical pipes are successively lower and the horizontal branch pipes successively higher. The oil passes away from the last compartment 1 through an adjustable funnel 12, and the liquid passes through a pipe 10, Fig. 3, into a tell-tale chamber 8 having an outlet pipe 34 arranged similarly to the pipe 17.
