579,761. Separating liquids. TRIGGS, W. W. (Bernam Oil Palms, Ltd.). June 15, 1939, No. 17526. [Class 46] [Also in Group III] In a continuous process for-separating sludge and moisture from raw vegetable and animal oils, the oil and, if necessary, a washing liquid such as water are admitted by tubes 3, 4 past a baffle plate 7 into a chamber 1 across which the mixture slowly flows. Purified oil separates and is withdrawn from a funnel 15, or from a straining box 16 provided with narrow slits, through tubes 18 to storage tanks, while the sludge is withdrawn through a passage 19 into a chamber 23 where additional water is added and the temperature raised by steam coils 26. The conditioned sludge is separated by mechanical screens or centrifugal separators not shown. Sediment may be withdrawn from time to time by valves 10, 12.
