Abstract

227,518. Alexander, H. M. Oet. 16, 1923. Separating by gravity.-In separating liquids of different specific gravity for example, oil and water, the mixture is submitted to a preliminary separation, the heavier liquid containing some lighter liquid being withdrawn and delivered in an upward direction into a body of the heavier liquid above which the lighter liquid collects, while the heavier is withdrawn evenly around the bottom of the body. The mixture is delivered into a separating chamber through a number of inlet pipes arranged to discharge at points spaced apart and so situated that local eddies and swirls are reduced to the minimum. The preliminary separating chamber may comprise a conical shield 6 with upper tubular casing 8, heating pipes 17 and oil receiver 9, all as described in Specification 205,935. The mixture, supplied by a pipe 14 to a feed box 10, is passed into the chamber by a pipe 15 which delivers over a dished deflecting plate 16. The water with some oil passes under the bottom of the shield 6 to an annular chamber 36, and thence up pipes 20, several of which are provided, into the secondary separator 22. The ends of the pipes 20 are turned downwards over deflecting plates 21 and are situated at about the height of the centre of gravity of the radial section of the annular chamber 22 and at a distance from the axis of the chamber equal to the radius of gyration. Oil separates and rises past a heating coil 24 and through pipes 25 to the receiver 9. Water rises from the bottom through an annular passage 26. and passes over a weir 27 and through filtering material placed between a perforated plate 28 and a plate 29. It rises in a passage 30 and then filters downward through a suitable medium in an annular chamber 31. The discharge pipe from the lower end of the latter chamber rises vertically to a discharge weir, the column of liquid in this pipe balancing that at the centre of the apparatus.
