Walls.-Furnaces, ovens &c. are formed of interlocking bricks of the kind described in Specifications 165,120 and 229,362, but provided with projections and recesses of such shape that the bricks may be assembled at right-angles one above another and a complete check obtained in the joints against flames and gases, with or without asbestos cord in the joints. Figs. 1 and 2 show a stretcher brick and Figs. 3 and 4 a header. The stretchers have on one face a row of bevelled projections b connected by shallow ribs d, and projections h of the same height as the ribs and formed with holes i; the opposite face is formed with corresponding recesses c, c'. The projections and recesses may be square, octagonal, or round; keying grooves j are provided in the ends. The headers have two imperforate projections b at one end, and four shallow perforated projections h connected by ribs k between which is a large aperture m. Halfbricks of similar construction are used where necessary. The structures so formed are faced on the sides not exposed to gases by whole or half bricks, Figs. 8 and 11, which are similar to those described but are without the projections band grooves j. In one modification, shown in Figs. 14 and 15, the main bricks are provided with grooves p for asbestos cord o instead of projections b, and interlock at.the ends by projections q and recesses r; the ribs s in the facing bricks a<6> and some of the other bricks may be sunk to ensure a continuous airway. In another modification, shown in Figs. 18 and 19, the flame check is produced by shaping each header a' and stretcher a<8>, Figs. 21 and 23, as two bricks t, u joined integrally together but displaced vertically and horizontally, the connecting parts u acting as flame checks and keys. Facing bricks a<10> may be added.
